I’ve been wanting to look up the laws for awhile and found this, “headlights are limited to about 20,000 to 75,000 candela, according to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108.”
I have no idea how the units of ‘candela’ work but a range of 55,000
seems like a lot.

Yes, this. Starting with HIDs in the early 2000s.
I don’t like calling them “bright” because then some lighting pedant will say “The Heifner curve between lumens and color temperature follows a non-linear path.....etc etc...so they’re technically no brighter than regular headlights!”
Whatever. The sharpness of the edges or the weird blue/purple effect bug me. And back to LEDs in particular , if I turn my head quickly, I absolutely see the flicker, which can be oddly distracting. Not a dealbreaker, just weird. Flashlights, home lamps, car taillights, you name it.
Like watching LeMans at night in slow-mo where the lights are only lit half the time.

Then everybody will be blind. Seriously, though, those lights obliterate everything for the other cars on the road.

Wasn’t it Gandhi who said “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”? yeah, that prediction is going to come true very soon.

1 candela = the light produced by a single candle. 55,000 candela = a big ass fire.

Even worse ... when you flash your high beams to tell them to turn theirs down, and then they flash you back .

You can pry my LED headlights from my cold dead hands.
LED bulbs installed in non-LED housings can get fucked though.

People on the 2020 Outback forum have been complaining about getting signa led that they have their brights on when it is just the regular LEDs. I’ll take it in stride, because I now have GREAT lighting.

Plenty on the road in my area (including my car), I deal with it. I’ll take this rather than having moronic overcompensated cradle-to-grave “authorities” repressing lighting tech for the US market as they did for eons - now the differences between US and ROW lighting are less.
I am on my 3rd LED car, and I only recall being flashed once, by a Tesla of all things (or, of course). I flashed back, which resembled a well-lit outdoor stadium at night,

Just for this reason alone it just moved up the list for my next car.
No, I’m serious.

They seriously mess up my night vision. I’ll be fine with just headlights then I get blinded and have to turn on my high beams to see.

Seriously.
I went from super a wesome HIDs on my cadillac ATS to the weak shit in my Q60 and it’s miserable. I’m terrified every time i drive at night cause i can’t see shit and Texans hate paying taxes, so there are no street lamps anywhere.

They are so bright and white that they obliterate everything around them. I believe they pose a serious hazard to other drivers. But hey, those drivers can see fine.
